Walmington.

00 gauge finescale layout set on the East Anglian coast during the 1950s. Control system-analogue DC.

Walmington is a fictional small town set in East Anglia, with the operational setting based on the late 1950's early 1960's and set on the coast. The town has been developed piecemeal since the railway arrived in the 1870's. The railway was shoe horned onto a narrow coastal strip where there is a small harbour fed by an inlet from the sea. There is a weekday stopping passenger service increasing at weekends during the summer with additional through carriages to the Midlands and the odd excursion. Freight is local coal traffic, grain, cattle and parcels.

The location is named after, but not based on the setting for Dad's Army. The setting is a small coastal town in East Anglia at about the turn of the second world war. Steam and early diesels in either LNER or BR green liveries supply the motive power.

Walmington wanderings.

After the interminable journey along the MGNR (Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway) we are at last in sight, sound and smell of the sea. Our Gresley teak carriage crosses the estuary of the Walm and we can see the terminus at the end of the bridge off the causeway. There are always fishermen and gulls competing for a catch just here- it must be a good place. As the train comes to a stop, the platform sees a brief flurry of activity and then goes quiet as the passengers go off into the town or by bus and taxi to a further destination.

Walmington Market is in full swing today, so we can browse amongst the wide variety of stalls looking for bargains. Lots of people visit the town on Market days and all the shops and public houses are busy.
