Hazel Grove to Hazel Grove (Midland)

At our AGM in April 2025 there was an overwhelming vote in favour of developing a new, Exhibition standard OO gauge layout Hazel Grove to Hazel Grove (Midland).

The layout when ultimately complete, will comprise 4 scenes, Hazel Grove station, Hazel Grove (Midland) Station, Mirlees works/Bramhall Goods station, and Hazel Grove viaduct. The scenes will be built to be capable of being stand alone units or part of the larger layout, so the Club will be able to offer differing size layouts for exhibitions dependent on the space available.

We are now in the planning stage and will initially focus on building a standard fiddle yard capable of being used with each of the stand-alone units, and Hazel Grove (Midland) station as the first scene. The aim is to have this ready for the Society’s 60th show.

The aim is not to create an exact replica of the Hazel Grove area. By using modular units which can be placed onto the layout boards, so when running steam trains, the aim will be to have Hazel Grove station looking more like it used to with a coal yard, a goods shed, and cattle pens but for the modern era the station will be more like it is now, a commuter station only with a carpark. To complement the scene we would place the Red Lion pub when running steam trains but replace that with McDonalds/KFC buildings when running modern era trains.

We aim to build Hazel Grove Midland first. It will be modelled on the basis that the station is still open as it did only last about 11 years, closing during World War 1. Luckily, we have copies of original station drawings from 1906, and plans drawn up when the island platform building was taken down on the early 1950s, so we will be able to recreate that and the now also demolished signal box.

It is a project which is intended to call on the skills of all the Society’s members, and we hope it will encourage new members to join to be part of a multi-year project to make what we want to be seen as setting a standard for model railway club layouts.
